Grocery Shopping with Davey Wavey.

Dear Davey,

I’m curious. What do you buy when you go grocery shopping? I’d love to know!

From,
Sue

Dear Sue,

Your wish is my command!

Actually, my grocery shopping habits have improved greatly over the last few years. I’ve moved away from processed foods, simple carbohydrates, high sugar products and red meat to a healthier diet rich with vegetables, fruits, complex carbs and some lean meat.

In fact, I went shopping yesterday - and took a picture to share my purchases.

Check it out:

Here are the items pictured above:

  • Corn
  • Avocados (for my famous guacamole)
  • Fresh almond nut butter (which is great for snacking with apples or bananas)
  • Hummus
  • Black beans
  • Butternut squash (for vegetable quesadillas)
  • Whole wheat tortillas
  • Whole grain cereals
  • Whole grain bread
  • Cheddar, feta and Cotswold cheese
  • Soy milk
  • Organic milk (organic milk is healthier and contains much less saturated fat)
  • Free-range, organic chicken breast
  • Slice turkey meat (for sandwiches)
  • Minimally processed chicken patties (my favorite!) by Applegate Farms
  • Coconut water (it’s a natural alternative to sports drinks - and has more potassium than a banana!)
  • Tortilla chips (for my guacamole)
  • Frozen Brussels sprouts
  • Frozen adamame
  • Apples
  • Vine tomatoes
  • Poblano, Anaheim, yellow and Fresno peppers
  • Strawberries
  • Broccoli
  • Bananas (my favorite pre-workout energy boost)
  • Brown rice sushi (for lunch)
  • Lettuce
  • Carrots
  • Red onion
  • Cilantro
  • Garlic

As you can see, my shopping cart is filled with lots of (mostly) healthy food choices - but it’s not light on flavor. People often think that eating healthy means eating foods that don’t taste good. I couldn’t disagree more. I truly LOVE eating and think that - through smarter shopping - I manage to select colorful, nourishing items without losing any deliciousness. Moreover, this diet helps fuel my active, high-energy lifestyle and supports my fitness goals.

Were you surprised by anything in my shopping cart? Is there anything you plan on doing differently next time you’re at the market? Let me know in the comments below.

Love,
Davey Wavey

    Hey Davey,
You kept referring to your famous guacamole. Would you mind sharing the recipe? Also, I have started this habit where I don’t shop down the aisles in the grocery store. I just walk around the perimeter and will only buy things there etc.

    Thanks man!
    JJ

    • It’s on my list of videos to make!

      • dear davey,

can’t wait for that recipe! i hope u can also share your other recipes. i am a fan of healthy eating but u are right..i don’t want to miss the yumminess of it too. please please davey..share them 🙂

    • Alberto says:

The true mexican guacamole is prepared as follows:

three ripe large avocados with seeds (in order not to get brown)
      1 small onion finelly chopped
      Some cilantro finelly chopped
      Some lemon drops

If you want you can add one or two finelly chopped seeded tomatoes (if you want more quantity)

      That’s it.
Accompanies with recently made corn tortillas, a slice of white cheese (panela) and some fried pig skin (chicharrón).
OMG My mouth just started watering !

      Enjoy friend.

      Greeting from mexico City

AMAZING. You do buy a lot of Penis shaped things though. I really can’t wait for the above recipe either ! 🙂

  3. Great list! Can you post your typical lunches and dinners (or recipes) that you make on a regular basis?

  4. What would you recommend as a sports drink alternative to those of us allergic to coconut?

    • christopher says:

yes yes yes-coconut-in food-i just cant eat-i would like to eat Thai Cuisine-but it seems coconut is prevalent in its dishes.

      • Christopher says:

For those that are allergic to Coconut, you could easily make your own “sports” drinks by doing a Google Search for “DIY sports drink” or “Sports Drink Recipes.”

Most will have common baking ingredients, such as baking soda, table salt, and salt-substitute in them, as well as lemon juice, honey, and herbal teas. However, to avoid excess chlorine, I would look for something called potassium sorbate; it allows for you to have potassium, cuts back on the chlorine, and preserve the drink.

  5. your food looks delicious but expensive. perhaps a blog on how to shop for healthy but cost-effective food? my local food store charges crazy prices for oats, grains and anything not processed and frozen.

    • I have no idea where you live, but I live in the Finger Lakes region of New York…which mean lots of Mennonite and Amish people. There’s a local store that sells all sorts of more natural foods cheap. Plus, if you buy bigger quantities of the grain, the unit price is typically cheaper, and you can store a lot of this stuff in the freezer. (My freezer currently has Oat Bran-similar to oatmeal, and Whole Wheat Flour in it.) Hope this was helpful. 🙂

    • It does tend to be a bit more expensive… but it is one of those situations in life where you really do get what you pay for. There is a total-cost related to it that goes beyond the check-out. You may pay more up front, but you’ll also probably save quite a bit down the road. Your body is what it eats and if you fill it with low-quality food, you can expect a low-quality body.

      • christopher says:

i do know eating healthy means paying a bit more for food-as in grocery.you pay more-but you are healthier.actually if you search well-you can get some buys cheap-at for instance Whole Foods-frozen Kale-was a steal.

    • There are ways to get around the costs (buy in bulk, buy frozen), but if you don’t eat healthy - we tend to pay for it in increased medical and healthcare costs.

      • Yes Healthy foods are a bit more expensive, but if your dieting you also pay more attention to portion control. I tend to over eat yummy bad food more than the healthy food. With healthy foods I feel fuller and its great. Also if you are eating healthy you may decide not to eat out as much, eat a healthier restaurant meal and those i have noticed are generally cheaper in a restaurant, or even eat half your entree.

  6. Hello Davey,
I was wondering if I may ask, what was the total cost of all that? As I love Healthy food but found that it’s really hard to buy alot of it cause I only have a food budget of $115.00 that has last 30days. Which is very difficult but keep try though as I try to get whole great products but they can be expensive. I do shop at discount store but even then it can add up. I do get veggies beginning of the month but only last about a week except the frozen veggies. I’m thinking of growing my own veggies this year in my apartment as I love growing plants.Any suggestions?? Take care Just love watching and learning from yeah.

    • christopher says:

you can eat healthy at ALDI-just shop for fruits and veggies somewhere else-as their fresh fruits and veggies are limited in selection.

      • Click my name to see the picture:

Check out this vertical garden idea, using rain gutters to grow greens. Most greens do not need a lot of space for roots, so an inch or 2 of soil will do fine. If you don’t have a wall you can affix the gutters to you can make a frame with 3 or 4 upright, narrow boards. That is, if your porch gets any direct sunlight.

        • Great idea John, I have a south facing wall that gets full sun all day! Thanks.

I think you should add just a little bit of olive oil as well. for a more Mediterranean lifestyle.

i hate the taste of fresh, raw tomatoes. any tips on how to make them taste a little better without adding salt and everything else that is bad to them? i hate eating salad… i lived off it for a year

    • I hate tomatoes too. EXCEPT when we grow them in our garden. One plant can provide so many tomatoes, and we end up wasting most of ours because we grow at least 10 plants. I actually LOVE eating cherry or grape tomatoes right out of the garden. I hate salad too, especially iceberg lettuce, as I used to be a vegetarian and that was the only healthy food I ate…all the time. But again, fresh lettuce from the garden is great, or we buy the organic kind of baby lettuces. Both plants can be done in a small space too. They have the hanging tomato planters now, and lettuce can be done in a window planting box.

    • I generally don’t like raw red tomatoes too. As summer starts keep an eye out for Heirloom tomato varieties. There are a couple of heirloom varieties (Green zebra, apricot (has a fuzzy skin), and Cherokee purple are my favorites) that have totally different flavor profiles. There is also a hybrid variety called the kumato that is good and readily available. Good grocery stores and many farmers markets will let you sample a couple of varieties before you buy to see if there is one you like.

    • christopher says:

try oregano or mrs dash-to spice up the tomatoes.

    • organic tomato marinara sauce is a great “gravy” for all sorts of healthy dishes, not just pisghetti..

    • Nathan, try sliced tomatoes marinaded in Balsamic vinegar and basil. Let it chill in the fridge before you eat it.
      Good luck.

  9. Be careful with the soy… Not good for that prostate you love so much.

  10. Good haul, Davy! Thanks for pointing out that a healthy diet doesn’t mean bland and tasteless. Once a person gets to eating a healthy diet of fresh, whole non-processed foods, they generally find it mouth-wateringly good and to go back to processed foods is a drag. Also, in answer to those who say it is too expensive,… 1) it is more expensive to develop chronic illnesses later in life due to bad food choices, 2) acquaint yourselves with farmers’ markets, Asian markets and Latin-American markets - lots better bargains, 3) buy in bulk at places like Costco or even Sam’s. Also don’t worry too much about soy as one person warned. Those fears have been overblown and generally proven groundless. Lots of folks freak out about carbs, but carbs such as those found in fruit are what every cell in our bodies run on for fuel - so eat more fruit!

  11. Can’t wait til Paula Dean invites Davey Wavey to her food show and shows him how to use butter.
I’ll never forget my iouuuw reaction to you eating ketsup straight from the bottle. But I somehow managed to keep watching for your posts. Super glad I did. Want my recipe for perogies? Love ya Davey.

    Be well,

  12. Wow, Davey! Looks awesome! The guac recipe would be great! I too am trying to slim down lol ….not funny, very seriously. Thanks for caring enough to share your healthy food habits with us 🙂

  13. What no produce man or bag boy lol

  14. christopher says:

brown rice is great freshly made-but not a a leftover-the next day.you will never want white rice-again.

  15. This is a very good list. Have to translate it into German. Is “Alpes” on the pic the whole grain cereal? How much sugar does it have? Is that what Germans would call “Müsli” or “muesli” in English? Thx.

  16. wow.. corn chips and bread and cereal and three cheeses.. if i ate like that at my age, even in moderation id be huge.. j/s

  17. hi hi Davey Wavey you went to UMASS and spoke to everyone at the “LGBT Youth Symposium” on April 10th I went it was awesome 🙂

  19. Hey Davey, since you have such an intense focus on your health it’s surprising to see you’re still eating things like grains, etc. Have you ever looked into the paleo diet? If so what’s your take on it?

  20. I find your website very misleading. As an example you have an article about organic milk, but then in your shopping list you have a “milk” that is made out of a toxic and dangerous plant soy. You also had a webcast of how to love your body the way it is while keeping fit, but have a advertisement on the same page about penis enlargement. If you loved your body the way it is then why the need for a penis enlargement? Another thing, the link for the five food to never have is a picture of a banana. When I first saw this, it suggested that bananas were part of that list. Is this really the image you want to show?

  21. I appreciate all the veggies and fruit that you buy. However, I have to say that I was really suprised at the amount if meat that you eat. Is it because you enjoy it out for another reason? Thanks!

  22. Davey,

Can I suggest buying dried beans instead of canned beans? I just made the switch, and I can vouch for them: they’re a LOT cheaper, they cut down on the sodium, and they taste ten times better.

The other day I used some rehydrated (overnight) chickpeas to make roasted chickpeas and froze them in single-serving baggies. Yum!

    Luke

  23. I’m very surprised to see soy milk & edamame in your cart. At the very least I hope they are organic as soy products are 90% GMO. Its even beginning to be hard to believe the organic companies now. Aren’t you worried about the effects of soy for men? I use organic almond milk instead now. I belong to a food co-op. That can help to save money too. I can buy for the pantry & not have to keep running out to the store. Peace.

  24. Thank-you so much!!! I just started to change my whole life style and between The Lean Machines and yourself I think I’m set. Great list!

  25. What do you recommend for a family of 6 who has 1 teen, 1 tween & 2 little guys???

  26. how long does this last

  27. Davey:

My problem is not with the taste of healthy foods such as vegetables and fruits. I actually love the tastes. My problem lies within the texture of these foods. Many people tell me to make smoothies, and I completely understand that it is an easy way to get those healthy foods easily, but do you have any other ways that I can overcome this problem? I really want to, but I keep coming up with negative results.
    Your help is much appreciated!

    Thanks,
    Ray

  28. of course like your web-site but you need to test the spelling on quite a few of
your posts. A number of them are rife with spelling problems and I to find it
very bothersome to tell the truth nevertheless I’ll surely come
    back again.
