Davey Wavey’s Famous Guacamole Recipe.

I think my purpose in life is to make guacamole.

Over the years, I’ve talked a lot about my famous guacamole recipe. Whether served on a romantic dinner for two or a big get-together, my guacamole is always a huge hit. And, believe it or not, I’ve received more than a few emails inquiring about the life-changing recipe.

So, here it is. Food Network, this is not. But I did my best to film the recipe so you can see how it’s done. In less than 10 minutes, you can be enjoying this easy, delicious and healthy treat.

Look What’s Inside a Twinkie!

On this blog, Twinkies get a bad rap. But, as far as I’m concerned, they’ve earned every bit of criticism they get.

In fact, one of my favorite nutrition quotes is as follows:

Did you ever stop to taste a carrot? Not just eat it, but taste it? You can’t taste the beauty and energy of the earth in a Twinkie.

For those of you luck enough to be unfamiliar with Twinkies, they’re a popular American snack cake made by Hostess Brands. The box describes the processed food as a “golden snack cake with a creamy filling.”

So why is there so little love for this popular snack food? Take a look at what’s inside:

The ingredients are far from mouth-watering. And it seems like consumers are catching on. In January of 2012, Hostess filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. According to Hostess, customers are opting for healthier foods.

If Twinkies become a casualty of our healthier diets, I – for one – won’t be shedding any tears. Will you?

10 Tips to Overcome the Munchies.

Got the munchies? Distracting yourself is a great strategy to overcome cravings. And this picture is definitely a distraction...

Got the munchies? Having enough willpower to overcome your appetite for snack foods isn’t always easy.

Speaking of appetite, it’s important to differentiate true hunger from your appetite; they’re not one in the same. Hunger is your body’s need for food, while your appetite is really more about cravings. Since we’re talking about munchies, they often fall under the umbrella of appetite.

Here are a few tips to help you rein in your cravings.

  1. Keep tempting foods out of reach. Control your environment. If you do the shopping, don’t buy snack foods. If you don’t do the shopping, ensure that these foods are in cupboards and out of sight. Ask coworkers to keep candy in opaque containers. Simply seeing snack foods can fuel cravings.
  2. Identify food triggers. What causes you to snack? Is it boredom? Then do something. Is it emotional eating? Rather than just treating the symptoms, examine and treat the root cause.
  3. Drink green tea. Liquid can satisfy your oral fixation – and green tea has a zillion great benefits for your body. Since it’s hot (unlike cold tap water), you’ll have to take your time and sip it slowly. This will buy you the time to let your munchies pass.
  4. Don’t skip meals. Eating your breakfast, lunch and dinner will eliminate any actual hunger pains that your body might be feeling – and the subsequent snacking that may follow. It’s important to keep your body properly fueled with nourishing foods.
  5. Stock up on healthy snack foods. If you can’t beat ’em, join ’em. Replace unhealthy snack foods with more nutritional options. Celery sticks and carrots can make for some satisfying snacking. Unsalted peanuts are another great choice.
  6. Don’t snack from the package. Instead of eating directly from the tap, put snack foods on dishes or in bowls. Rather than eating the entire package, you can better control your portion.
  7. Brush your teeth. Believe it or not, the minty freshness of a clean mouth can curb food cravings. Try it!
  8. Distract yourself. You may discover that your munchies will pass. Call a friend or walk the dog. Distracting yourself from the munchies is one of the best ways to overcome them.
  9. Ask your body what it really wants. Take a minute, look in the mirror and ask your body, “What do you really want right now?” It’s probably not an unhealthy snack.

5 Best Easy, Healthy & Delicious Snacks!

If there’s one thing you should know about me, it’s that I love a good snack. In fact, I’m what you might call a snack connoisseur.

Snacks have gotten a bad rap. And since most people snack on potato chips, cookies or bonbons, maybe that bad rap is partially deserved. But today, I’d like to welcome you to the land of easy, delicious and healthy snack alternatives. They’re not processed, loaded in unhealthy fats, sodium or any of the other crap you might find in many prepackaged snack options.

These are my actual top five favorite simple and healthy snack options:

  1. Almond butter dipped frozen banana. The name says it all. Peel a banana, wrap it in plastic wrap and stick it in the freezer. Once frozen solid, remove the banana and slice it into generous chunks. Using a fork, dip each chunk into almond butter and place in a small plate or bowl. Let stand for a minute, and the almond butter will form a frozen shell around the banana. Eat and enjoy!
  2. Carrot sticks and hummus. Admittedly, I’m not a big fan of the taste of veggies. But a carrot stick dipped in hummus is both healthy and delectable. Hummi (is that the plural of hummus?) are available in a variety of flavors – so it’s a snack that never grows old. My favorite flavors are spicy chipotle and garlic lovers.
  3. Frozen fruit. Produce can be pricey – especially when it comes to fresh fruits and berries. I’ve discovered a simple trick. Stock up on cut frozen fruits (many are just a few bucks per bag), and mix them together into a small bowl. Frozen fruits are usually flash frozen at their ideal ripeness – and so they’re absolutely delicious. I prefer to eat them frozen; it’s almost like eating candy – I love it. I usually stick to a combination of raspberries, blackberries and strawberries. If you’re feeling extra fancy, add a dollop of yogurt.
  4. Apples and fresh peanut butter. Nothing beats a sliced Fuji apple and a few tablespoons of peanut butter. And fear not, though nut butters (like the almond and peanut ones I recommend) contain a lot of fat, it’s not the same kind of fat you’d find in, say, a fried mozzarella stick. If it’s available to you, opt for fresh nut butters. Apples, being rich in fiber, are also very filling – and so this snack is both scrumptious and satisfying.
  5. Hard boiled eggs. Once a week, I boil a dozen eggs and store them in my fridge. When I’m craving a snack, they’re super easy and convenient. They’re also packed with high quality protein. And though eggs have a lot of cholesterol, the impact of dietary cholesterol on blood cholesterol levels is fairly small. Moreover, if you are concerned, the yolks can be easily removed to eliminate the cholesterol. Eggs become less healthy when we fry them in butter, top them with bacon and cheese and sandwich them between thick slices of white bread. Eating hard boiled eggs is a healthy and delicious alternative.
