10 Commandments of Gym Etiquette!

fitness-meme-3Continuing with my “10 Commandments” series, today I’m sharing etiquette rules that every gym goer should follow.

  1. Thou shalt not walk in between an exerciser and the mirror. When someone is working out, they’ll often use the mirror to spot themselves and to ensure proper form. If you walk between the exerciser and the mirror, you’re blocking their view – and being rude. Walk around them.
  2. Thou shalt wipe down equipment. If you sweat on it, clean it up. No one wants to lie down in your workout juice.
  3. Thou shalt not sit on the equipment while texting, browsing Grindr or taking selfies. Gym equipment is for exercising. And playing on your phone is not exercising. Even if you only check your phone during your rests, you’re likely resting a lot longer than you think. The reality is, your gym is probably busy and someone else might be waiting to use the machine. Keep your phone in your pocket.
  4. Thou shalt put weights away. Unless you’re exercising with a personal maid, there’s no one to clean up after you – so put your equipment away. And besides, lifting weights to put them away can make you strong, too.
  5. Thou shalt neither hog nor hover. Hogging equipment is when you spend way too much time on a given machine, especially when the gym is busy. If you’re on a machine for more than a few sets, allow other people to cut in during your rests. On the flip side, if someone is using a machine that you want, don’t hover around them like a fly on shit. During their rest in between sets, politely ask if you can cut in.
  6. Weightlifting BackwardsThou shalt ask how to use equipment if unsure. If you have questions, ask a trainer or someone at the front desk. Ignorance is not bliss because you’ll probably end up hurting yourself – or, even worse, as a gif on the internet.
  7. Thou shalt not smell. Going to the gym isn’t an excuse for slacking on hygiene. Don’t invade our nostrils with offensive odors or smells. Wear clean clothes and apply some deodorant.
  8. Thou shalt not do curls in the squat rack. Squat racks are for doing squats, and most gyms only have one or two. They’re a precious commodity. If you’re doing another exercise, like curls, you actually don’t need a rack at all. So don’t take up prime real estate.
  9. Thou shalt not go to the gym while sick. Exercise is important, but working out sick is bad for yourself and the people around you. Give your body the rest it needs – and don’t ruin things for the rest of us.
  10. Thou shalt ________. You tell me! Write the 10th commandment of gym etiquette in the comments below.

  1. Are there minor commandments for pet peeves? Here are some of mine:

    – leaky headphones
    – dropping weights and otherwise making loud grunts and yelps while exercising
    – in the locker room, choosing a locker right next to an in-use locker when there are plenty of free lockers nearby

  2. thou shalt not jerk off in the shower.
thou shalt not creep on the gym bunnies. mind your business.
    dont judge.
thou shalt not do curls in the squat rack. ever. no. stop. im telling..

  3. Jay Alexandar says:

Thou shalt not stare at my junk in the showers…

  4. You already said it, but ‘though shall not smell’ is huge. When somebody is wearing workout clothing that he/she has not washed in a week, it is totally offensive.

  5. Thou shalt not judge. We are all on our own journeys. Some of us are in great shape, others may just be starting. Be kind.

  6. John Kanauz says:

    10. Thou shalt wear underwear or under Armour.

Replace #1- the showers and sauna are NOT a gay bathhouse. Please take that shit to the appropriate place!!!!!!!

  7. Though shalt not use the locker room to cruise. That’s what bars and Grindr are for.

  8. Bryan Daniel says:

    Thou shalt not:
…use more than one excersize equipment at a time
…take pictures or videos of other people
…wear those creepy shoes with toes

  9. Tho shalt not JUDGE!
I may be squatting with 10% of what you are, but its my personal best!

  10. Jefferson says:

Thought salt give it 100% and be happy with your body! And yes, WEAR DEODERANT!!!

  11. Shalt not grunt loudly or otherwise call attention to how much harder you’re working than everybody else. Besides, grunting is counter-productive. You should be breathing.

  12. LOL – posts like this never fail to crack me up. Just after reading this I headed to the gym myself where I watched a guy walk up to the squat rack and bust out some curls – so I had to come back here and leave a comment.

I gotta say, everyones comments i’m right on board with lol! Especially those toe shoes or people who decide to do body weight workouts like push ups in front of the dumbbells.

  13. Christopher says:

    Thou Shalt Not:

…leave one personal item at multiple machines to “reserve” them for a circuit. We all need the machine/benches and cannot wait for you to finish 30 minutes later.

…grunt/scream to do your sets. If you are louder than music pumped in my earbuds you are TOO LOUD!!

…read a book/magazine/or newspaper while one a bench/machine. Cardio is one thing but once you hit the floor put it away.

  14. Thou shalt be considerate of others in the locker room – don’t sit directly on any bench when you’re naked (sit on your towel), and don’t spray deodorants, powders, or colognes near anyone else….they might be allergic or asthmatic.

  15. jan moerman says:

  16. Model of Fit says:

Thou shalt not throw down weights after finishing a set, nor grunt like a caveman while doing reps.

  17. Guy who use AXE or other strong perfume/colonge. Have a shower guys! Geez its not the same thing.

  18. It has been said a lot of times already: Thou shalt be quiet! Whether grunting, dropping weights, playing your music so loud in your headphones that I can hear it above the music in my headphones, it puts the rest of us off our routine.

  19. David Olvera says:

    Thou shalt not stare.

  20. As Ken said: no strong colognes or perfume for anyone! You might think you smell good but you saturate the air with your “scents” when you sweat! That brings tears to my eyes, can induce headaches as well, and certainly is distracting when I pick up the smell on my clothes from a bench and take it where ever I go in the gym!

  21. Charlie B. says:

Use appropriate clothes, use Grinder or a bath house to expose youself, yew you may have a great body but surely people will appreciate you lo leave something to think about latter instead of showing your barcode.

SHARE!! The one youre sahring with today will share wit you tomorrow and uf tomorrow never comes you did aomething good!

Enjoy your workout and let others enjoy theirs!

  22. People snapping their gum loudly. Annoying!
People singing while wearing a headset.

  23. My relatives all the time say that I am killing my time here at net, except I
know I am getting experience all the time by reading thes nice content.

  24. – throw your used towels on the floor for others to pick up.
    – leave locker doors open after leaving so that others can hit their heads or shins.
    – wash your hands after peeing or taking a dump.
    – stop staring at yourself in the mirror and flexing for more than 5 minutes. We know you know you’re hot.
    – not have long conversations with your “brother” while others are waiting for the machine/bench.
    – know what a set is so that you can give an accurate estimate of how much longer you will be to the person waiting.
    – take up locker room bench space with all your gym shit.
    – make your playlists before going to the gym so that you don’t take forever searching for the perfect song to do your set.
    – I know it’s already been stated but stop texting, especially when the gym is full. Save it for later!!!!

  25. Hello to all, how is everything, I think every one is
getting more from this website, and your views are good in favor of new people.

  26. Thou shall not pee in the showers. You wouldn’t use the toilet as a shower so please don’t use the shower as a toilet.

  27. An outstanding share! I’ve just forwarded this onto a friend who was doing a
little research on this. And he in fact ordered me lunch due to the fact that I discovered it for him…
lol. So allow me to reword this…. Thanks for the meal!! But yeah, thanks for spending
time to discuss this matter here on your web page.

  28. I love looking through a post that can make men and women think.
Also, many thanks for permitting me to comment!
